Valga in winter is quiet, and that is the point. The days are short, the snow (when it comes) makes the old wooden houses look like a postcard, and you can have a church, a park or a forest path almost to yourself. Here is how we would spend a winter day or weekend here.

Plan for short days: in December, there are only around six and a half hours of daylight. Do outdoor things in the middle of the day and save museums and cafés for the dark.

Indoors

St John’s Church (Jaani kirik). The only church in Estonia with an oval floor plan, built in 1816. Christmas concerts here are worth checking for.

Valga Military History Park and museum. The vehicles are outdoors, but the museum section is a good stop on a cold day. Check opening hours before you go, as winter hours are shorter.

Our shop. We are on Kesk street. Come in to warm up, pick up a card or a gift, and ask us where to eat.

Outdoors

A walk across the border. It takes five minutes and makes a good photo in the snow. Read the story of Valga-Valka before you go.

The Pedeli River path. About 5 km of path along the river. In winter it is a peaceful walk, and on good snow years people ski along the river valley.

Karula National Park. About half an hour away by car. Hilly forest and frozen lakes, very few people. Wear proper boots and tell someone where you are going, as paths are not always cleared.

Christmas in a border town

From the end of November, both Valga and Valka put up Christmas lights and trees. If you are buying presents while you are here, we can help with personalised gifts and cards.

Mardipäev and Kadripäev

If you are here on 10 or 25 November, you may meet children in costumes going door to door. It is an old Estonian tradition. Here is what it is and what to give them.

Getting here in winter

Trains from Tartu run all year, and the station is a short walk from the centre. Roads are cleared, but drive with winter tyres, which are mandatory in Estonia in the winter months. For a full day plan from Tartu, see our Tartu to Valga day trip.

The Estonian version of this post is also available.
